2024 Ninth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals Visit

Multiple events scheduled from  10 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.


As part of its ongoing public education effort, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit will visit the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. This court visit is hosted by the Rehnquist Center and will include four distinct events, outlined below. 

Each event requires a separate registration. To allow ample space for all, we would appreciate that you register for only those events that you are fully committed to attending.

 

Oral Arguments 10-11:30 a.m.

Those signing up to attend court in person will hear arguments in both cases; unlike our other court visits, there will be no transition between matters. Follow this link to read case materials for the cases being heard.

Case 1:  USA v. Heraclio Osorio-Arellanes 

Appeal from conviction and sentence for first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, assault on a federal officer, and use of and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence. 

 Case 2: USA v. Steven Martis

Appeal from conviction for transmitting a threat to kill Nancy Pelosi.

Important information for in-person courtroom attendees: Check in for the arguments will begin at 8:45 a.m. Photo ID required for entry. No backpacks, purses, or electronic equipment permitted in the courtroom. We cannot offer secure storage for your belongings, so please make arrangements ahead of time. No food or drink allowed. Professional dress strongly encouraged.

 

Lunchtime Panel with Law Clerks 12-1:15 p.m.

Students are invited to a lunchtime panel featuring nine Ninth Circuit law clerks. This event offers an opportunity to learn about the paths the clerks took to secure their positions, what they do in their daily jobs, and other information related to their positions at the court.

Q&A with Ninth Circuit Judges 1:30-2:30 p.m.

The visiting judges will hold a question and answer session with students. They are unable to discuss matters pertaining to the morning arguments and other ongoing cases. Registrants should come to the session prepared with questions for the judges.

 

Registration Info: Follow this link to register for Q&A with the judges. Classroom size limits room capacity for the in-person Q&A session to 32; other registrants will be able to watch via livestream in Room 135 until that room reaches capacity.

 

Closing Reception 2:30-3:30 p.m.

An informal courtyard reception will close the court's Tucson visit. All are invited to attend this event.
