The Phoenix-based law firm Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart, P.C. has made a $50,000 donation to the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law in support of the college’s $6 million “A New Day in Court” initiative to significantly reconstruct student courtrooms and expand the advocacy program’s offerings.

When construction is completed, students will work from the Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart Plaintiff’s Table, an upgraded space in the college’s new Kevin R. Boyle Trial Courtroom.

University of Arizona Law has outgrown its current courtrooms, which were built in 1977. The “A New Day in Court” initiative will create fully functional, state-of-the-art spaces that give students a proper courtroom setting in which to learn and practice. The college’s advocacy program will also be renamed to the Thomas Mauet Advocacy Program, in honor of Professor Emeritus and renowned trial expert Thomas Mauet.

“It is a privilege for our firm to support the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and the ‘A New Day in Court’ Initiative,” said David S. Shughart, one of the firm’s partners and a 1993 University of Arizona Law graduate. “University of Arizona Law has a history of graduating outstanding trial lawyers, and this exciting project will provide future students with a state-of-the-art facility and the best possible trial advocacy training.”

Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart, P.C. specializes in personal injury and wrongful death litigation, and the firm’s attorneys have recovered more than $300 million on behalf of clients by way of jury awards or settlements. Founding partner Michael Beale is also a University of Arizona Law alumnus (Class of 1968).

“I’m thrilled that future Arizona Law students will benefit from Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart joining us in reimagining our advocacy program,” said Ted Schmidt (’77), a member of the “A New Day in Court” steering committee. “High-caliber alumni like David Shughart and Michael Beale are critical to our success and the future of advocacy at Arizona Law. Equally important, it says volumes about the character of John Micheaels and Thom Slack, who are not Arizona alumni yet generously support the education of new trial lawyers in such a meaningful way.”

The Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart gift brings the total amount raised for the “A New Day in Court” initiative up to $1.3 million. For more information on the effort, including fundraising goals and how to donate, visit law.arizona.edu/court or contact Director of Development Megan O’Leary.
