The annual Joseph Jenckes Competition is a closing arguments competition between students of the University of Arizona College of Law and the Arizona State University College of Law.
Sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers, the competition alternates location each year between the two colleges. Each college selects two students for the final competition, which is judged by Arizona members of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honorary society of trial lawyers whose membership is limited to 1 percent of the practicing bar. Being selected to membership is a significant honor, and membership includes the most prominent trial lawyers in Arizona. The competition is named after Joseph S. Jenckes, a University of Arizona Law graduate and alumnus of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Fall 2018 Competition
The University of Arizona Law competition to select two representatives will be held on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 18 and 19, 1-5 p.m. in Room 126. The runoff round, in which the top five contestants will repeat their arguments, will be on Monday, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. in Room 160. The top two contestants will represent Arizona Law in the competition against ASU.
Each student will make a closing argument for the plaintiff in Adams v. Chandler Department Store. You may pick up a copy of the case file from Professor Barbara Bergman outside her office (Room 209). The arguments may not exceed 15 minutes.
All 2L and 3L students are eligible for the competition. If you wish to enter the competition, please sign up on the list posted on Professor Bergman's office door (Room 209) as soon as possible, but no later than Monday, Oct. 15. The 2018 final competition will be held at Arizona Law on Nov. 9.
