David J. Euchner
David Euchner is the appellate unit supervisor and resource counsel of the Pima County Public Defender's Office, where he has worked for 20 years. His appellate and post-conviction practice is centered on defense of persons convicted of first-degree murder. He currently and has previously served on several committees of the State Bar of Arizona and the Arizona Supreme Court tasked with rewriting criminal rules and jury instructions. In 2014 he was the President of Arizona Attorneys of Criminal Justice, the state affiliate of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and in 2025 he was elected as AACJ's President-Elect, making him the first person to lead AACJ twice. He has chaired or co-chaired the AACJ amicus-rules committee since 2011. Professor Euchner has acted as counsel, for a party or for an amicus, in cases resulting in more than 100 published opinions, and he has participated in more than 80 oral arguments, evenly divided between the Arizona Supreme Court and Arizona Court of Appeals. He has received several awards from AACJ and the Arizona Public Defender Association for advocacy and leadership.
Professor Euchner teaches courses both in the College of Law and in the undergraduate law program related to criminal law. He is the course developer for the asynchronous Criminal Procedure course. He and Professor Barbara Bergman co-authored the Arizona Criminal Practice Manual, first published by Thomson Reuters in 2021 and updated each year, which is used by prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges assigned to criminal caseloads.
