Professor Joseph Berriman is the founder and Team Supervisor of the Crisis Negotiation Team at the University of Arizona Police Department, a Negotiator on the Pima Regional SWAT Team, and a Professor of negotiation and mediation at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. He served as a court-appointed mediator for the Arizona Superior Court with over 15 years of mediation experience, as well as a violent crimes detective at HIDTA's counter-narcotics joint task force and homicide detective on the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team.
Professor Berriman graduated with honors from University of San Diego’s School of Law before becoming an FBI certified crisis negotiator and instructor, and later being recognized across Arizona for his award-winning work in the legal environment as a court-appointed mediator. Combining lessons learned from mediation and hostage negotiation, he teaches conflict resolution and de-escalation skills to professionals around the country, including as a Professor at University of Arizona's College of Law, FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Course, Arizona Attorney General’s Office Civil Rights Division, Arizona Superior Court, American Bar Association, and Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. He continues to practice mediation through The Center for Community Mediation and Facilitation, and serves as the Faculty Advisor for the University of Arizona Mediation Team.
He seeks to elevate the profession of law enforcement through the emerging field of crisis negotiation by creating a new, innovative model of community partnership and engagement.
