Negar Katirai

Director, Domestic Violence Law Clinic

Associate Clinical Professor

Negar Katirai comes to the University of Arizona with a diverse variety of experience in public interest and corporate law practice. Most recently, Ms. Katirai served as Assistant Director of the Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law at Stanford Law School, where she engaged in research and developed reports regarding the public interest field, including the delivery system for legal aid to the underrepresented, and best practices for evaluating public interest legal services. Prior to that Ms. Katirai served as a Staff Attorney at the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia and at Break the Cycle. In both positions she provided holistic legal advocacy services to survivors of domestic violence, including in protection order, child custody, and child support matters. Ms. Katirai has also worked as an Associate at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where her pro bono practice focused on representing asylum applicants in immigration court and legislative advocacy on behalf of child victims of trafficking.

As Director of the Domestic Violence Law Clinic, Ms. Katirai supervises law students in providing legal representation to survivors of intimate partner violence. This includes helping survivors obtain orders of protection against their abusers and advising them on custody, housing, and immigration law issues.

As Director of the Post-graduate Community Law Group, Ms. Katirai supervises graduates of the law school who serve as fellows for a one-year term in immigration and family law cases. Fellows in the group have the opportunity to learn both practical courtroom and client skills while helping domestic violence survivors and immigrants achieve the stability necessary to support themselves and their families. Ms. Katirai also teaches Family Law and a seminar on Domestic Violence.
