Self-Determination Initiatives with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs

IPLP faculty and clinic students in the International Human Rights Advocacy Workshop have partnered with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) on a series of comprehensive research and advocacy projects to help inform the OHA’s initiatives to advance the self-determination of Native Hawaiian peoples.

The OHA is involved in a number of nation building and governance initiatives to promote the self determination of Native Hawaiian communities. IPLP faculty research has focused on the potential legal mechanisms and related legal strategies that Native Hawaiians can use to pursue self-determination, including the United Nations (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Article 73 of the UN Charter, and the International Labor Organization Convention No. 169 on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries of 1989.
