It’s time to get real about getting older. Nursing homes and long-term care facilities have had declining quality care for decades that coincides with inadequate staffing and rampant infections. This environment led to the disastrous impact of COVID-19 and now places the nation at an inflection point, which could drive changes for a more resilient long-term care system. This program describes the fundamentals of the long-term care industry: its legal structure, funding mechanisms via public and private payors, along with oversight and enforcement over staffing and infection control. After so much suffering and death, it is time to reexamine the cracks in infrastructure and build a system prepared to deliver quality long-term care for all older Americans. The Hall Center for Law and Health's, "2021 Health Law Conference: Older Adults & Aging with Dignity," will discuss how to ensure that our older adults age with the dignity they deserve. A keynote address by Tara Sklar, J.D./M.P.H. will discuss what long-term care facilities must change in order to provide a more resilient long-term care system, especially in light of the disastrous toll the COVID-19 pandemic took on older adults in long-term care facilities. A panel of interdisciplinary practitioners will then highlight key areas of law and policy affecting older adults that are ripe for change.
