Karen M. Kowalski

Associate Dean, Administration & Professor of Practice

Karen Kowalski joined the College of Law in 2013.  She holds an LLM in Tax Law from Georgetown University Law Center (2002) and a JD from DePaul University College of Law (2000).  Her previous experience includes practicing tax law at Winston & Strawn LLP, where she was a partner and actively involved in the hiring and supervision of law students. Her areas of interest and expertise include tax planning, tax controversy, reportable transactions, tax-exempt organizations, taxpayer privacy, and Subchapter S corporations.  Associate Dean Kowalski mentors and advises students and graduates interested in careers and/or advanced studies in Tax Law, including supervising JD student papers in the area.  She supervises the Director of Externships and she teaches in the JD and other College programs according to need and availability.  

Associate Dean Kowalski is a member of the College’s senior leadership team and works with the Dean on day-to-day, ongoing, and crisis response decisions, strategic planning, and communications for the College.  Associate Dean Kowalski represents the Dean and the College at meetings with University and community leaders, faculty, and staff.  She works with the Dean, Associate Deans, and Assistant Deans across the areas of finance, grants, admissions and financial aid, student career development, student affairs, faculty affairs, online education, marketing and communications, information technology, and building management.  She is the College point of contact for matters referred to or involving the Office of General Counsel and the lead liaison with UA Human Resources professionals.
